Past

Manual network designing Manual calculations may be performed to check if the process outputs are as expected. The model should be simultaneously matched with existing system to identify loopholes. Manual planning can be tiring and error-prone.

Present

ERP software An ERP provides a comprehensive management system that allows for integration of transactions, material planning, and other functions into a single system. ERP works by connecting these systems to one central database and management platform. As a result, you can monitor all departments from purchasing and sales to finance and human resources from one hub.

Future

Blockchain – Enables blockchain-powered networks to create commercial models that consider not only monetization strategies, but also incentives, stimulating collaboration among members and accelerating network effects. Applying Blockchain technology increases the viability and agility of Supply Chain Network Design. Adding resiliency, sustainability, and robustness to Supply Chain Network Design by considering Blockchain technology.

IoTMake sure your IoT solution for supply chain meets the modern tech trends and is fully functional. The IoT device will transmit its location, which can be picked up by GPS satellites and used to track the movement of goods.

Automation of inventory An automated inventory management system (IMS) is an inventory software system that automates parts of the inventory management process. Instead of having your team manually enter data and perform tedious management tasks, the software does it for them. It is more accurate, efficient, and insightful than manual inventory tracking and saves a huge amount of time.

Autonomous mobile robot (AMR) This is a type of robot that can understand and move through its environment without being overseen directly by an operator or limited to a fixed, predetermined path.

Past

Analyzing the trade-offs Determining the effect of decreasing one or more key factors and simultaneously increasing one or more other key factors in a decision, design, or project. Depicts the relationships between system life-cycle cost and the system’s performance requirements, design parameters, and delivery schedules. Trade-off analysis shows how cost varies as a function of system requirements (including Key Performance Parameters), major design parameters, and schedule.

Optimization – based supply chain analysis based supply chain analysis – Aims to ensure the optimal operation of a manufacturing and distribution supply chain. The entire process involves five key steps: planning, sourcing, execution, delivery and returns.

Present

Advances in network design modeling Advanced Network Design (AND) is a sophisticated GIS-based physical network inventory management system providing comprehensive end-to-end design and documentation for the life-cycle of all types of access networks. Key factors affecting an advanced network design model are Market Structure, Demand Plotting or Estimation, Market Segment, Procurement Cost, Product /Conversion Costs, and Logistics Costs including Inventory holding costs, Overheads, and Cost of Sales.

Optimization Seeks to find an optimal combination of factories and distribution centers in the supply chain. The solution should match supply and demand, as well as find a network configuration with the lowest costs. Supply chain network design can be defined as a process to establish a complete view of the organization’s supply chain.

Using ERP data ERP packages contain several modules, such as finance, sales and distribution, materials management, manufacturing and production control, human resources, plant maintenance and quality management. It eliminates redundant and inconsistent versions of the same data in the organization and across data domain types.

Future

Smart Warehouse A software solution that offers visibility into a business’s entire inventory. The supply chain can be managed by fulfilling operations from the distribution center to the store shelf. The system serves to control and monitor the movement and storage of materials in the warehouse. It involves many processes such as sending, receiving, or delivering materials mixed with other supply chain systems. The system ensures transparency in your business and management.

Universal visibility Supply chain visibility (SCV) is the ability of parts, components, or products in transit to be tracked from manufacturer to final destination. It enables shippers to improve customer service and cost controls through management of inventory in motion, proactive status updates, limiting disruptions, and risk mitigation.

Optimization of working capital Working capital refers to the amount of money and assets that are required to run your day-to-day operations. It can refer to cash, accounts receivable, inventories, transport fleets, and warehousing infrastructure. The working capital optimization cycle is a way of looking at a company’s receivables, payables, and inventory and how it handles those on a day-to-day basis.

The future of Network Designing in Supply Chain w.r.t to Technologies and Processes

  • Network designing that is also known as ‘Strategic supply chain planning is the process of building and modelling.
  • The supply chain understands the cost and time to bring goods and services to market within an organization’s available resources.

The goal of Network Designing

  • The main goal of network designing is to strengthen your supply chain by not only mapping and modelling but also ensuring you are optimizing every part of it.
  • The future design will balance service level against products and purchasing costs.

Importance of Network Designing in Supply Chain

  • It is important to recognize that a company’s network determines its supply chain efficiency and customer satisfaction.
  • Optimal supply chain network means the network must be able to meet the long‐term strategic objectives of the company.

When designing a supply chain, the following steps must be followed:

  • Define the business objectives
  • The scope must be defined
  • The form of analyses to be done must be determined
  • Determine what tools will be used
  • Finally, work completion and the best design

Future of Technology of Network Designing in Supply Chain

To understand Whether artificial intelligence can help in network designing and optimization

First, let us understand what exactly is network design and optimization?

So in a supply chain network which starts from my nth year supplier to my end customer, we have to place our resources and utilize them in such a way that I am achieving the most optimal cost to serve while achieving the SLS that is promised to my customers.

I have to design the supply chain in such a way that I am able to achieve these two things this is basically called network design and optimization.

Now the network itself why we are seeing optimize because it may not be the cheapest network but it is a network which will help you achieve your SLS hence you will not be the cheapest but you are still being low cost while achieving your practice.

So How can artificial intelligence help us?

Now in a standard supply chain, You’ve designed your network and , You know what is the demand,

You know what are the assets that are available to you to fulfill that demand in terms of your warehouse space in terms of your transportation assets,

You know what are the norms that you have to follow what are the lead times and everything is there so but these are fixed values so as to say.

However, the supply chain doesn’t work if I take today’s example there is a certain disruption in one of the countries of your major supplier due to the panel and suddenly you find your supply chain has

turned over its head so what would your existing design network with your device help you it will not so you will have to find alternative means of fulfilling that particular suppliers raw material or whatever it is supplying to you

So artificial intelligence will help you in automatically  being able to sense that kind of disruption then based on it’s own computing it should be able to suggest to you what are the best alternatives and still try to achieve your objective which may be reducing your cost or maybe maximizing your profit or achieving your results so whatever it is artificial intelligence would be able to help you do that.

So let me explain with an example –

Let’s say you designed your network for the next one month based on certain assumptions that these your certain demand either for your  raw materials or your customer demand fulfilled with this network now suddenly there was a disruption in, one of your suppliers so and that deception could be in intimated to you in any form.

Let’s say they communicated to you that they will not be committed to delivery time so as soon as you mark that as a data point in your systems the ai the engine in the background should be able to capture the data point and start evaluating that for this item if there was a description then what are the alternative sources and be able to compute for that alternative source that if you use that particular source then what would be the effect on your SLS on your cost on your profit and suggest to you automatically that this is the best alternative source and you should not stop that you should go and change the purchase order or cancel the purchase order or create a new purchase order and automatically deliver that purchase order to your supplier so ai should in fact work as a digital twin of your supply chain so this is the end goal of artificial intelligence helping you achieve your supply chain network of objectives.

How far are we from doing that I think we are quite near in fact some companies have already developed a prototype to do that of course, you need a lot of data and real-time data to do that but again that is also available nowadays so this is what I perceive as artificial intelligence in helping us achieve our network optimization .
